What is Sustainability Engineering?
In the recent past, concerns have arisen with respect to sustainability, or lack thereof. At its foundation, sustainability promotes the idea of utilizing the world’s resources in such a way so that they are available for a long time to come.
Budding from that comes sustainability engineering, which takes that idea and adapts it to engineering processes by creating the goal of designing and operating systems so that they last for current and future generations.
Why is Sustainability Engineering Important?
The first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word “sustainability” may have to do with the environment, but in fact, sustainability engineering benefits far more than just that. There are two other pillars of sustainability that sustainability engineering attempts to improve - economy and society – and all three work together mutually.
For instance, improving production efficiency can decrease environmental dependence and help promote economic and environmental sustainability. It also creates social sustainability in that it can help create a safer and more educated workplace, which can improve public perception of the company.
